A year after Diego Maradona’s passing: A look back at what has happened

Diego Maradona passed away a year ago, on November 25, 2020. The Argentinian is among the greatest footballers of all time and left behind a legacy that will probably never be matched. The passing of the legend shocked and saddened football fans from all across the world.

To many, Maradona was more than human, he was a god. From November 3, 2020, until his final hours on November 25, the icon was hospitalised. He was initially admitted for an operation due to a blood clot. The cause of death was heart failure, which seemingly had nothing to do with the brain tumour.

The pandemic prevented Maradona from seeing his family and being close to the football pitch. These two things had a very deep psychological impact on him, and he left suddenly and peacefully.

Right now, a case of wrongful treatment and medical negligence is ongoing against the medical practitioners that were assigned to take care of Maradona. Another case is surrounding his inheritance, which is between Maradona’s lawyer, Matias Morla, who holds the rights to Maradona’s brand, his ex-wife Claudia Villafane, his brothers and his five recognised children.

But moving on from this ugly legal battle, tributes have been seen from every corner of the world. Napoli, in particular, named their stadium after their iconic former player upon his passing. Tributes from Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team have also been seen. The Maradona Cup, between Italy, the country where the former player became famous in, and Argentina, is also expected to be held in his honour.
