Samsung announces pair of jeans with a dedicated Galaxy Z Flip 3 pocket

Samsung thinks there are 450 people out there willing to pay $1,100 for a pair of jeans that only have one pocket. You do get a free smartphone as part of the deal, though.

Through a collaboration with Australian clothing brand Dr Denim, the South Korean company has created jeans specifically for carrying around the folding Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphone. The limited-edition jeans are called the Z Flip Pocket Denim and clearly form part of a marketing campaign for the diminutive size of the Flip3 (when folded). As Hayley Walton, Head of Brand Marketing at Samsung Mobile points out, “Smartphones are often not pocket friendly.”

The special-edition jeans have a “Z” stitched over the traditional pockets, and the back pockets were removed entirely. In place of those, a rear pocket design was “flipped” to the front of the jeans and made to fit the exact dimensions of the folded Galaxy Z Flip 3.

“Who needs big pockets? They take up a lot of space, they don’t look stylish, and the latest phones slip and slide inside them. Redesigned to exclusively house the Galaxy Z Flip3, the Z Flip Pocket Denim jeans make pockets a thing of the past,” writes Samsung in a statement.

The Z Flip Pocket Denim jeans cost $1,499 a pair. It may seem like they cost more than the phone itself, but that’s not the case. The $1,499 price includes a pair of Z Flip Pocket Denim jeans as well as the Galaxy Z Flip 3 to place in its unique pocket.

The limited-edition bundle of jeans and the included Galaxy Z Flip3 is limited to 450 pairs, and will use “bespoke, stylish packaging.” They cost AUS $1,499 ($1,120) in both men’s and women’s styles, through Dr Denim’s Australia website.

Unveiled in August, the Galaxy Z Flip3 is a smartphone with a 6.7-inch Infinity Flex Display that folds in the middle, similar to a flip phone. When the 2,640 by 1,080 screen is folded up, an external 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display is visible on the outside, providing notifications.

Powering the device is an octa-core Snapdragon 888 with 8GB of memory and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. The cameras on the back are 12-megapixel shooters covering wide and ultra-wide angles, accompanied by a 10MP front-facing camera.
