Serge Aurier joins Villarreal until the end of the season

Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier has decided to join former coach Unai Emery at Villareal, and has joined them on a deal until the end of the season. The pair previously worked with each other at PSG, where Aurier played until 2017 before making the move to Tottenham.

In four years, Aurier has had a rather tumultuous stint with the London whites. He has faced criticism for his defensive errors time and time again, but has shown his quality on several occasions as well. Spurs terminated the player’s contract this summer, enabling him to sign for any club for free.

The Ivorian has made his choice, and will be presented as a new Villareal player after the international break. Aurier will link up with the Ivory Coast national team as they take on Malawi in the World Cup qualifiers. The right-back is expected to wear the number 25 shirt at his new club.

Reflecting on his Tottenham departure, Aurier said: ‘I have really enjoyed my time at Spurs and would like to thank the club and the fans, but I feel now is the right time for me to move onto a new challenge.’

Villarreal won the Europa League last season, and have endured a shaky start to the new campaign. The Yellow Submarine is the only unbeaten team remaining in La Liga. They are currently 11th with a game in hand, and have won their most recent fixture against Real Betis 2-0.
