La Liga to make salary caps public for the 2021-22 season

La Liga is expected to make the salary caps for its teams public for the 21/22 season, according to COPE.

According to the report, the plight of Barcelona has come to the forefront. The Catalonian club had a salary cap worth €347 million in 20/21, which has dropped down to a meagre €97 million. The drop worth over €280 million in salary limits has prevented Barcelona from retaining Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, with both players leaving Camp Nou this summer.

Messi had a salary worth €36 million even after taking a huge pay cut, which is more than 30% of Barcelona’s total wage limit. Hence, it is easy to see why they had to do away with their prized asset owing to compliance with the La Liga rules.

Last season, Real Madrid had a salary cap worth €473 million and it has now risen to almost double that amount, at €739 million. The likes of Sevilla (€200million), Atletico Madrid (€171million), Villarreal (€159million), Real Sociedad (€127million) and Athletic Club (€111million) all have a higher salary cap than Barcelona for the ongoing campaign.

Valencia have also had to go through a financial drop that has seen their wage cap drop down from €93 million to €30 million. Their wage budget is now a third of what it previously was, which has caused them to do away with some of their prized assets such as Dani Parejo and Rodrigo.
