US Open 2021: Emma Raducanu wins her first Grand Slam, defeats Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3 in Final

Emma Raducanu who is just playing her second grand slam tournament has written her name into the history books after becoming the second-youngest grand slam champion at the age of 18. She is only behind Maria Sharapova who won the Wimbledon at the age of 17.

The British Tennis player defeated Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets in the finals to complete a dominant run to win the US Open 2021. Emma becomes the second player after Serena Wiliams to not lose a single set in any game of the US Open this year.

However, it wasn’t an easy road for Emma Raducanu as she had to win three qualifying matches to qualify for this tournament. In total the 18-year-old tennis player has won 10 games in the US Open at the Flushing Meadows.

After winning the prestigious tournament, the British player gave her thoughts about the future of tennis in an interview. “The future of women’s tennis, and just the depth of the game right now, is so great. I think every single player here in the women’s draw definitely has a shot of winning any tournament.”

Speaking about the finals, Emma Raducanu displayed her skills while being under immense pressure throughout the game. The British teenager’s calm decisions during crucial moments helped her pull off a remarkable victory against Fernandez.

Emma Raducanu earns the biggest paycheck as a teenager after winning the US Open

Emma Raducanu who was ranked 150th in the World becomes the first qualifier to win one of the four major grand slams. Further, she is also the first British female tennis player to win a grand slam after 44 years.

With this Grand Slam victory, the 18-year-old teenager has earned the biggest pay cheque by any teenager ever. Raducanu took home 2.48 million dollars after capping a dominant run to win the tournament. Whereas the other finalist Leylah Fernandez has earned 1.25 million dollars for reaching the finals.

This was a historic tournament for many reasons with the final being the first time in the professional era where two unseeded female players went head to head against each other. Moreover, this was the first time that two teenagers took centre stage in the finals since the 1999 US Open final.

Hence the future for women’s tennis is looking very bright after this tournament. Moreover, Emma’s grand slam victory at the age of 18 will pave a path for many players and inspire them to strive for more. The depth of women’s tennis is frightening and it is sure to captivate the attention of fans in the future.
