Jerome Boateng found guilty of assault; fined €1.8 million

Jerome Boateng has been sentenced to a €1.8 million fine for assaulting his ex-girlfriend by court in Munich. The former Bayern Munich man appeared in front of a judge yesterday for a trial.

The claims of domestic violence go back three years to 2018, and the trial was delayed due to a witness testing positive for Covid. The events happened while the player and his former partner were on holiday in Turks and Caicos islands. The two parties reportedly gave very different accounts of the happenings, but the court has now announced its verdict.

Boateng could have faced upto five years in jail as punishment, but has instead been subjected to a financial compensation. The €1.8 million fine will be paid in daily installments of €30,000 for 60 days.

According to Bild, the player was accused of throwing a glass lantern and a cooler bag full of drinks at the woman. However, the player has denied the charges leveled against him.

Bayern Munich decided to let the defender’s contract expire at the end of the 20/21 season after spending close to a decade with the club. The player was recently revealed as a new Lyon player, signing as a free agent. In his final days as a Bayern player, he was out of the starting line-up. Boateng has lost his place in the German national team as well, and has now signed a two-year contract with the French club.
