The entry of Xiaomi and Realme into the laptop market will bring healthy competition

Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, and others have dominated the laptop market worldwide for quite some time. Players like ASUS, Vaio, Fujitsu, LG, Samsung, MSI and others are trying to change the market with their unique products at great prices.

Then comes the entry of smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor, Realme and others; these brands have used their resources to make laptops that fit into their AIoT ecosystem. So, they are happy to sell laptops at prices we have never seen, helping customers get a variety.

Xiaomi and Realme are known for putting the best specs for the price on their smartphones, so they are continuing this momentum on laptops. However, obviously, you do miss the support and technology prowess that top brands like Lenovo, Dell, HP, and others have in the market with their laptops.

Consider Xiaomi’s latest addition – the RedmiBook e-learning Edition and the RedmiBook Pro, priced at 41,999 and 49,999, respectively; these are really good budget laptops. Sporting 15.6-inch FHD anti-glare displays, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD and sporting up to 10 hours of battery life, Xiaomi has kept the basic right.

Also, you have a great design, good build quality, a large trackpad and a nice keyboard with 1.5mm key travel. The only big difference between the two is that the RedmiBook 15 e-learning Edition sports an Intel Core i3-1115G4 processor, while the RedmiBook Pro 15 has a better Intel Core i5-11300H processor. So, overall, considering the price, these are really very cheap and affordable options.

The laptop has a metal body that provides a 90% screen-to-body ratio and a 100% sRGB colour gamut. Also, it will be one of the slimmest and lightest laptops in India, with a thickness of 14.9mm.

With Intel Iris Xe graphics, you also have Wi-Fi 6 technology for connectivity and a Thunderbolt 4 port to charge the battery; the 65W charger provides up to 50% of charge in just 30 minutes. Also, the Realme Book Slim provides an incredible battery life of up to 11 hours; not to forget, you have a backlit keyboard and two Harman Kardon speakers that support DTS Audio.

The laptop comes at a starting price of 44,999 INR for the basic version that features an Intel Core i3 processor with 8GB RAM along 256GB SSD, while the one with an Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD is priced at 56,999 INR. Overall, again the Realme Book Slim is another great laptop for the price and goes to show the fierce competition in the mid-range laptop market in India.

Also, Xiaomi will unveil another premium Mi Notebook, which is suspected of having better build quality, design and better display & overall specs on August 26th. So, you get an idea of how these smartphone companies are attracting more customers to be a part of their expanding AIoT ecosystem.

So, this will force laptop giants to lower their pricing or bring better specs in laptops at more competitive prices. Overall, as a consumer, this is a good time as with healthy competition we will see the best out of all existing OEMs while these smartphone companies offering value-for-money products for end-users.
