IND vs ENG: India make a thrilling comeback at Lord’s on Day five to win the Second test against England

England was on top after day four of the second test match and as a result, most cricket fans must have not given a chance to the Indian team to win this game. However, India sparked a big comeback on day five to win the second test match at Lord’s.

Big credit goes to the Indian bowlers for helping India win the match as they did not lose hope and dismissed the English batting order in 50 overs to win the test by 151 runs. Let’s take a look at what happened on day five of the second test.

How did India rise from the dead and win against England?

India was leading by 154 runs with four wickets to spare as the fifth day was about to commence. England was hoping that they would dismiss Pant early on day five and their hopes turned into reality as the Indian wicket-keeper edged one off Robinson’s bowling in the 85th over.

Consequently, the tails of the English bowlers were up after the dismissal of Rishabh Pant. Moreover, Many Indian supporters in the crowd must have lost all hope at that moment. But the Indian lower order surprised the entire world as they showed incredible patience and determination to stay on the crease.

Ishant Sharma added 16 runs before he was deceived by Robinson and was trapped lbw. Later Bumrah joined Shami on the pitch as India were leading by 182 runs at that moment. During this period, Indian dressing room was hoping that the tail would at most take the lead to 200 so that they could have some hope of defending this total.

However, Bumrah and Shami both started scoring with ease and in a matter of time, the lead crossed 200. Soon the English bowlers were getting frustrated and Shami started smashing the bowlers all around the park. On the other end, Jasprit Bumrah also gave good support and added valuable runs to the Indian scorecard.

Few overs before lunch, Mohammed Shami decided to unleash his wrath on Moeen Ali and quickly reached his second test fifty. India’s lead had crossed 260 at lunch break. The Indian captain declared the innings after India reached 298. As a result, England had to chase 271 in 60 overs whereas India had to dismiss the English batting order within 60 overs.

Courtesy of Mohammed Shami and Bumrah’s innings, the chances of England winning the test match was almost impossible. Moreover, India were in the driving seat after gaining a mental edge at the end of the 1st session.

To win the match, India needed early wickets and the Indian pace attack provided three early breakthroughs. Bumrah and Shami dismissed Burns and Sibley for duck and hence this created panic in the English dressing room. Further Ishant Sharma removed Haseeb Hameed and England were in all sorts of trouble at 44-3.

Everything was left upon the English captain Joe Root to save the match. He started scoring runs on one end and Root and Bairstow slowly started developing a partnership. Just when things were going out of India’s hand, Ishant Sharma got the important wicket of Bairstow on the last ball before the tea break.

After Tea, Jasprit Bumrah got the biggest wicket of the game as he dismissed Root after the restarted. The English captain got out on 33 and India needed five wickets in 38 overs to win the second test. Butler and Moeen Ali frustrated the Indian side as they survived for 16 overs.

But Siraj broke the English resistance as he dismissed Moeen Ali and Sam Curran in two consecutive deliveries. As a result, India were fingertips away from a great win at Lord’s. Although Robinson and Butler stuck around for some time and things were getting intense. But Bumrah and Siraj cleaned up the English lower order and picked the last four wickets to secure an emphatic win for India.

England 1st Innings: 391/10, 2nd Innings 120/10
