Tottenham 1-0 Man City: Son’s goal sees Nuno start new term in high spirits

Nuno Espirito Santo gave Manchester City their first shock of the Premier League season in his first game in charge of Spurs, defeating the champions of England 1-0.

Harry Kane was not named in the squad, and the Portuguese stated his absence was due to his late return to training and that he needed more sessions to be fit to help the team. As a result, the London club started with Heung-min Son up front with Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn on the wings, and Dele Alli behind the Korean.

The first half was quite underwhelming on the attacking front, with neither side really creating anything meaningful. There were several decent chances for both teams, but nothing major came from them. However, the second period spelt a different story as Tottenham upped the tempo to their game.

The game opened up for both teams, with turnovers leading to quick attacks on both boxes.

Assisted by Steven Bergwijn, Son scored the only game of the match from the edge of the penalty area. His shot blazed past Ruben Dias, and Ederson did not move as he was beaten by the Tottenham star.

City would then enjoy the lion’s share of possession, and Tottenham sat back into their own half to defend their lead. Bergwijn had the chance to double their lead, and should have, after a defensive error, but his effort went wide.

The presence of the crowd was felt strongly, as they cheered every clearance from the Spurs players as they defended their lead till the end of the game and started the season in the best way possible.
