Legendary Germany and Bayern forward Gerd Muller passes away at the age of 75

Gerd Muller, one of the greatest strikers to ever play the game, has passed away at the age of 75 as announced by Bayern Munich. 

The legendary forward featured for Bayern Munich and Germany and won the Ballon d’Or award in 1970. He spent 15 years in Bavaria, at the peak of his abilities and spent a few years in America prior to hanging up his boots. 

Due to his phenomenal striking prowess, the German was nicknamed the Bomber of the Nation. Up until the 20/21 season, he held the record for the most number of goals scored in a single Bundesliga season, with 40 to his name. The record was set in 70/71 and stood for 40 years, interestingly.

Muller was named the top scorer in 17 different competitions throughout his career, and scored 523 goals in 580 appearances throughout his career. The German also provided 104 assists, taking his overall goal contribution to over one per match.

The forward won the World Cup in 1974 and the Euros in 1972 with Germany, and was named the footballer of the year in 1967 and 1969. He was capped 62 times by the German national team, and scored 68 goals for his country. 

Gerd Muller won the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal 4 times, and lifted the European Cup (at the time) thrice, all with Bayern Munich. With all these achievements to his name, the legend rests as one of the best forwards to play for club and country.
