Diego Costa to return to Atletico Mineiro after 6 months away from football

Diego Costa is set to return to football, joining Atletico Mineiro six months after terminating his contract with the Rojiblancos, subject to a medical assessment soon.

The player has verbally agreed a new deal with Atletico Mineiro for two years, and his return is expected to be announced in the week ahead. The final details will also have to be agreed on before the return can be confirmed.

Costa has featured for Atletico Madrid on several spells throughout his career, most recently joining them from Chelsea in 2018 for a fee worth €60 million. Prior to his spell at Chelsea, Costa was registered to Atletico from 2007 to 2009 and 2010 to 2014. On both occasions, he was loaned out to several clubs before being signed by Chelsea where he went on to help them win the Premier League.

The 32-year-old has scored 83 goals and provided 36 assists for Atletico Madrid in 216 appearances across all competitions and spells. Following the termination of his contract in January, there were rumours that the striker could go to Brazil or the Middle East. However, he did not sign with any club and spent six months away from football.
