Xiaomi becomes the top Global Smartphone Brand for the first time ever!

Xiaomi has had an amazing year despite the Coronavirus Pandemic and the subsequent chip shortage that has affected a lot of tech giants and the year seems to be getting better for it as it surpassed tech mammoths Samsung and Apple in June 2021 to become the number one smartphone brand in the world for the first time ever!

According to Counterpoint Research’s Monthly Market Pulse Service, Xiaomi’s sales grew 26% Month on Month in June 2021, making it the fastest-growing brand for the month. Xiaomi was also number two globally for AQ in terms of sales and has cumulatively sold close to 800 million smartphones since its inception in 2011.

Counterpoint’s research director, Tarun Pathak noted that since the decline of Huawei began, Xiaomi has been consistent as well as aggressive in its approach to fill the gap created by Huawei. The OEM has been expanding in regions where Huawei had a considerable presence such as China, Europe, Middle East, and Africa. In June, Xiaomi was further aided by China, Europe, and India’s recovery and Samsung’s decline due to supply chain issues.

Senior Analyst Varun Mishra further elaborated that the Chinese market witnessed a 16% MoM growth in June driven by the 618 festival and Xiaomi was the fastest growing OEM, riding on its aggressive offline expansion into lower-tier cities and the stellar performance of the Redmi 9, Note 9, and the Redmi K Series.

At the same time, due to a fresh wave of COVID in Vietnam, Samsung witnessed a disruption in its production in June, Xiaomi took advantage of its strong mid-range portfolio and wide market coverage and was the biggest beneficiary from the short-term void left by Samsung A Series.

Moving forward, if Samsung’s situation in Vietnam does not improve, then Samsung’s production is likely to remain hit with Xiaomi continuing to gain share from the Korean giant. However, once Samsung recovers, we may witness a shuffle amongst the rankings again.
