Junior Firpo to join Leeds United from Barcelona

Barcelona outcast Junior Firpo is set to join Premier League club Leeds United this summer, with negotiations surrounding his transfer completed, according to renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The Yorkshire club have agreed on a fee worth €15 million for the player, and the final amount could go higher including add-ons. Only the final details surrounding the terms of the transfer remain to be sorted out before it is a done deal.

Firpo was pursued by AC Milan earlier this summer as well, but they only wanted a loan deal for the player. Barcelona, on the other hand, wanted to get the player off their books and the Italian club decided to opt out of the race for him. Firpo operates as a left-back and was signed by Barcelona two years ago for €18 million from fellow La Liga team Real Betis.

However, Jordi Alba’s unwavering form and his stronghold over the position has denied Firpo of the majority of playing time in his favoured position. In two years at Camp Nou, the 24-year-old has only made 41 appearances and has scored two goals.

He will be the second player to be offloaded from the Barcelona squad this summer, after Jean-Clair Todibo was confirmed to be joining Nice on a permanent deal. The money raised from the sale will help the club function in this difficult time, and getting his wages off the books will also provide more financial stability to the club.
