Bayern Munich women win Frauen-Bundesliga

Bayern Munich have won the Frauen Bundesliga after six years, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 on the final day. Linda Dallman scored a double, and an own-goal from Laura Störzel, and one from Lea Schüller paving the way.

Dallman scored two in the first half to put the Bavarians ahead, and the match never turned around against them. The three points saw Bayern Munich win the league and get ahead of Wolfsburg, who were the only other team in the title race.

Bayern Munich won 20 games en route to the title and only lost one game whilst drawing one. This means that they only dropped 4 points all season, in a tremendously consistent display.

The victory is especially memorable for Simone Laudehr, who ends her 18-year career by finally getting her hands on the league title. Throughout her career, she has won the World Cup, European Championship, Olympic gold, Champions League and DFB Pokal.

The title defeat was particularly difficult for Wolfsburg because they managed to defeat Werder Bremen 8-0 on the final day.

“The championship would be the crowning moment and the deserved reward for the path we have taken, continually strengthening the team to establish ourselves at the top in Germany and internationally,” Hainer told Munich’s Tageszeitung newspaper ahead of the final game of the season.

“We are only halfway into our four-year plan and we will keep investing,” promised Hainer, highlighting the signing of Japanese World Cup winning midfielder Saki Kumagi from Olympique Lyon ahead of next season.

“In order to promote women’s football in German more generally and remain competitive internationally, we desperately need to work on structures,” he added. “We need better infrastructure and a more professional general organization.”
