The cash prize from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020, where the Indian team made it to the final 14 months ago, is yet to be paid to the Indian women. The Indian women’s team cricketers should have won a total amount of USD 500,000 (350,000 pounds) after reaching the final clash, where they lost to Australia in front of a packed crowd of more than 86,000 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as per The Telegraph, is the sole owner of the prize money meant to be given to the Indian cricketers. Tom Moffat, the CEO of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations, said the problem was brought to their attention in August 2020 and that they contacted the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Indian players about it.

Moffat told Telegraph Sport, “prize money is payable to players for their on-field performance in pinnacle events and the late non-payment of money owing to players is unacceptable.”

He also said that they urge Indian players to consider forming a players’ association so that they, as well as the sport in India, can prosper from collective player involvement in a similar way as their international counterparts do.

While the ICC is liable to pay the cash amount within the span of a week of the tournament’s conclusion, unless the board requests that the ICC pay the players directly, the prize money is normally directed to the team’s governing bodies. The Indian women’s cricketers would have earned around $33,000 each if the prize money was divided equally among the 15 players in India’s World Cup squad.

The members of the Indian women’s cricket team will receive their prize money by the end of this week, according to a senior BCCI official. ” The transactions have been completed, and they should collect their share within the next few days”, he said.

When asked about the reason for the delay, he said that the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai has remained closed due to the COVID-19 situation that has caused delays in payments across the country.
