European Super League offers way too many cons to be a reality

Talks about a European Super League have resurfaced in the last few days, and the Premier League and UEFA have both put out statements condemning the idea. The release talks about teams participating in any such closed competition being banned from the league and European football organised by UEFA.

Moreover, players of these clubs will be prohibited from playing for their national team, which is something that no player would want to risk. This would also include many successful club professionals missing out on major tournaments like the World Cup or European Championship completely.

Moreover, the plan for the European Super League reeks of a base full of lobbying. Certain teams across Europe would be entitled to participate in the competition due to their stature, which would rule out other clubs emerging in continental football.

Hence, teams like Leicester City, Atalanta, Borussia Monchengladbach or even Rennes could completely miss out on Champions League football despite clawing their way into the tournament by hard work despite not having the financial backing like the other European giants.

The current system in place makes for very sustainable and entertaining fixtures throughout the season. A tournament that regularly pits the big dogs against each other would drain the life out of the speciality of such matches in the first place.

Such matches take place in the Champions League every once in a while, and taking away from their rarity will surely suck the excitement out of the modern format of the game as we know it.
