Atletico suffer shock defeat to Levante at home

While Atletico Madrid seemed invincible only a few weeks ago, their recent fortunes have made the Rojiblancos seem mortal after all. The league leaders suffered their first home defeat in over a year as they lost 2-0 to Levante at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The underdogs heading into the match drew with Atletico at their own stadium only three days ago, and they have now managed to take 4 points off the title favourites, blowing the title race wide open.

Should Real Madrid win their game against Real Valladolid tonight, they will have closed the gap between themselves and their city rivals to only three points. And should that happen, Real’s season will all of a sudden look much better than it has been in recent weeks while Atletico’s will look like a painful bottle job, considering the stronghold of Barcelona and Real Madrid on the top of the league.

With that said, credit must be given where it is due and it goes to Levante. The 8th placed team has now managed to beat both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at home. Jose Luis Morales and Juan de Fruta managed to get on the scoresheet for the visitors as they managed to do what so many have tried and failed at, to defeat Atleti in their own backyard.

Atletico were ultimately unlucky on the day, having suffered only their second defeat in the league this season. This match was even more important since the next challenge that Diego Simeone’s men face is that against Chelsea in the Champions League, who have been unbeaten ever since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel at the club and are looking to extend that run to continental football too.
