King James breaks Karl Malone’s all-time record for most turnovers

LeBron James holds many records because of legendary longevity in the league. While still being a candidate for the MVP title in his 18th season, it often leads to records involving scoring, assists or wins.

On Friday, with his fourth turnover against the Memphis Grizzlies, James reached a total of 4,525 for his career. That breaks Karl Malone’s long-standing league record of 4,524.

Functionally, James has played point guard for most of his career. Handling the ball that often almost inevitably leads to turnovers. It also leads to assists. Despite having nearly the same number of turnovers, James has almost twice as many assists in his league career as Malone had. His assist-to-turnover ratio is significantly better. Malone’s turnovers, are harder to explain considering how rarely he controlled the ball compared to James.

James averages 3.5 turnovers per night for this career. Considering how often he controls the ball and how much longer he is likely to play, James is probably going to set a record that is never again touched in NBA history.
