Frank Lampard’s Chelsea succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, mounting even more pressure on the shoulders of the Chelsea boss.
Recent performances have left Lampard’s position at Chelsea up in the air, with fans calling out the coach’s inexperience. The former England international is only in his third year as a coach, and has only had managerial experience with Derby County in the Championship before joining his former club as a manager.
While it is fair to succumb to a team that were better on the pitch on a given day, it is the manner of the performances put on by Chelsea that is the most concerning for fans of the club.
The Blues suffered defeats at the hands of Wolves, Everton and Arsenal on the road before getting hammered by Manchester City at home, in a humiliating 3-1 defeat, in which the scoreline could easily have been worse.
Fans all over the internet have been left with a bitter taste in their mouth due to the dismal showing from Chelsea. One of the most disturbing things about the way the Blues have been playing is the resurgence of back-passing.
Leicester sat deep yesterday, and there was little Chelsea could do to break the lines open and involve their forwards. Most of their possession saw the players pass the ball between the defense and the midfield, and passing to the wingers being the only method of getting the ball anywhere forward.
The over-reliance on the “Cross and Inshallah” philosophy has also been lamented by many, with no real creativity from linear play in the midfield becoming a real cause for concern. Chelsea’s defensive problems have now resurfaced horribly, and the absence of N’Golo Kante in midfield is not making things any easier for Chelsea either.
The Stamford Bridge outfit host Wolves at home in their next match, and should performances not improve by then, or at least till the game after against Burnley, we could be seeing Thomas Tuchel or Max Allegri as the new Chelsea boss.
