Frank Lampard’s job under threat after the shocking performance against Manchester City

Winning a game against Pep Guardiola’s City was always a big ask when you consider the form that Manchester City have been on, and the fact that it has surprisingly gone unnoticed given their position in the League table.

The Cityzens absolutely outplayed Chelsea from every possible angle, and there are now serious doubts about Frank Lampard’s future as Chelsea boss. While there were reports from Fabrizio Romano that Lampard had the backing of the board, there is concern among those in charge regarding the future of the team after the dismal outing against City.

Even if Chelsea dropped points at home, a strong fight against the former PL Champions would have saved the conversations calling for Lampard to be sacked. However, it was the worst-case scenario for the Blues boss as his time conceded three in the very first half, and could have gone on to ship five or six.

Frank Lampard now holds the worst points per game ratio of any manager in the Roman Abramovich era, and despite his status as a club legend, it is damning evidence that things have not been right at the club for a while now.

The fact that Chelsea spent over £200 million in the summer, injuries plaguing the squad in the first few weeks of the season, and that most of their key signings are still adapting to the Premier League is not making the job any easier for the Blues boss.

Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have been the subject of widespread criticism given their lack of performances on the pitch, and so has his selection of players, with only a certain set of players making the starting XI every week.

Max Allegri, Thomas Tuchel and Andriy Shevchenko are some of the names that have been linked with the Chelsea job should Frank Lampard be dismissed. The club is in a precarious position right now, and the next few weeks will make it clear as to whether the board can trust in Lampard or whether there has to be a change in scenery at the Bridge.
