Following the victory of Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team at Estadio De Dragao on May 29th this year, which make them automatically qualified for the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup many football fans, pundits, bookmarkers and bettors would be hoping Chelsea win the title come December 2021 in Japan. The Blues will be hoping to do a little better than the 2012 team when they first won the UEFA Champions League in Allianz Arena against the German giant Bayern Munich. In 2012, Chelsea did not only lose the FIFA Club World Cup final narrowly against Corinthians of Brazil but had also lost the UEFA Super Cup woefully against Atletico Madrid in 4-1defeat.

The 2021 FIFA Club World Cup will be the 18th edition of the tournament and would be between the title winners of the six continental confederations, including the host nation’s league champions. The current titleholder is Bayern Munich and it is expected that Chelsea another European club would also lift the trophy eventually.

Chelsea who together with the Winner of the 2021 Copa Libertadores will be joining the tournament at the semi-final stage is no stranger to the tournament, having participated nine years ago having lost to Corinthians at International Stadium, Yokohama, in Japan.

FIFA Club World Cup Past Winners

  1. Real Madrid                4 titles
  2. FC Barcelona               3 titles
  3. Bayern Munich             2 titles
  4. Sport Club Corinthians Paulista           2 titles
  5. Liverpool FC.              1 title
  6. FC Internazionale            1 title
  7. Manchester United.     1 title
  8. AC Milan                        1 title
  9. Sport Club Internacional          1 title
  10. São Paulo Futebol Clube      1 title

The last 17 editions of the tournament have witnessed 10 winners, with 7 coming from Europe alone, while the other three emerged from South America, specifically clubs from Brazil. Real Madrid has the highest trophy, with 4 titles, which is not surprising considering their recent dominance at the UEFA Champions League.

While English Premier League teams have reached the final of the tournament four times, they have only managed to win it twice, with Liverpool losing 1-0 against Santos of Brazil in 2005, and Chelsea also losing 1-0 against Corinthians of Brazil in 2012. However, Manchester United became the first EPL club to lift the trophy when they defeat LDU Quito of Ecuador in a 1-0 victory in 2008. Liverpool became the second English team to win the FIFA World Club Cup when they defeated Flamengo of Brazil in 2019 at Khalifa International Stadium, Doha in Qatar.

This year’s venue is set to be in Japan after it was originally scheduled to take place in China with an expanded version, but the plan was canceled due to fixture congestion caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on football.

At the moment, only Chelsea has qualified for the Fifa Club World Cup. The other participants will be determined when their continental competition ends with the eventual winner. Also, the ice main Champions League, OFC has been canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic. Hence, their representative might be last year’s champion.

Chelsea Prediction and Tips

The current UEFA Champions League winners will be hoping to become the 8th European club to win the FIFA Club World Cup title, and at the same time, the third English team to win the trophy.

Should Chelsea lift the trophy in Japan later this year, including a victory at the UEFA Super Cup against Villareal, which is expected to take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland at Windsor Park, the Blues would become one of the few clubs in the world to lift all the major competitive trophies in club football.

Only Mateo Kovacic has won the FIFA Club World Cup from the Chelsea team that just won the UEFA Champions League. The Croatian international won three of FIFA Club World Cup with the Spanish giant, Real Madrid in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Ngolo Kante would be hoping to add this title to his list of medals to lay more claims to his chance of winning a Ballon d’Or at the end of the year.

This tournament would be the first time experience for Thomas Tuchel and the third time for German coaches. Jurgen Klopp became the first German coach to win the title in 2019, while Hansi Flick became the second German coach when he led the current titleholder Bayern Munich to victory recently. A win for Thomas Tuchel would make it a three successive victory for German coaches in a row.

Pep Guardiola has the highest title in this tournament with three titles, followed by Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti having won two FIFA Club World Cup as coaches. With the current Chelsea players, style, and confidence, the chance of West London Blues lifting the trophy at the end of the day is quite impressive.
