Tottenham Hotspur surrender advantage at the top with a loss against Leicester

Spurs’ flawless run came to an end after they lost to the reigning champions Liverpool at Anfield as the Merseyside club extended their unbeaten run at home. The London club failed to get back to winning ways as they hosted Leicester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Serge Aurier slammed into Wesley Fofana at the edge of the penalty box to give away a spot-kick to the visitors, which Jamie Vardy happily converted to give Leicester the lead.

Toby Alderweireld mistakenly knocked the ball into his own net shortly afterwards to go down 2 goals around the hour mark.

The stats reflect a match similar to that of their defeat against Liverpool. However, this time, they enjoyed the majority of the possession and only managed to get 8 shots, of which only 3 were on target.

Leicester, on the other hand, managed to shoot 17 times and get four on target. However, no goals came to any of the competing sides from their own man.

Serge Aurier was slowly getting back to a good form before giving away another cheap penalty to throw away the stalemate and go behind. It seems likely that summer signing Matt Doherty will now be preferred over the Ivorian to watch over the right flank of the defence.

With their defeat against the Foxes, Spurs have lost their advantage at the top of the Premier League and have now dropped to fifth place. Brendan Rodgers’s side, on the other hand, sit behind Liverpool (currently 1st) with 27 points from 14 games.

This season of the Premier League is one of the most competitive ones in recent memory. Only ten points separate the title holders Liverpool from the 10th placed team in the league at the moment, West Ham United.

Spurs will have a chance to address their consecutive defeats in the Premier League when they face Wolves after Christmas, while Leicester face an in-form Manchester United, who have a chance to go up to second if they win.
