Fastweb to launch new 5G-enabled home broadband solution powered by Qualcomm across 500 cities

The Italian telecommunications operator, Fastweb, has announced the launch of a new 5G-powered home broadband solution. This new product will be powered by Qualcomm who is the world’s leading wireless technology innovator.

Fastweb has around 2.7 million wireline customers and 1.8 million mobile customers. They have a fiber-optic network infrastructure of 50,500 kilometers and aim to develop even further. European telecom companies are moving towards the adaptation of 5G-supported devices so that they can compete in the future which is bound to run by 5G technology.

With this new announcement, Fastweb has announced 5G mm Wave-based fixed wireless access (FWA) as services for customers. This fixed wireless access (FWA) has the capability to substitute traditional fiber optic or home broadband delivered by local cable operators. “We are very satisfied with the collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies which has allowed us to find the best technological solution to offer our service.” – Andrea Lasagna, chief technology officer, Fastweb.

The company claims that they can maintain high-speed connectivity even if the range is increasing continuously. This factor can play a huge role in Fastweb’s favor. The Italian telecom company is planning to launch this across 50 cities initially. They plan to grow this reach to 500 Italian cities by the end of 2021. This can help ISP’s aim to deliver a speed of about 1Gb/s (gigabit) to at least half of the Italian population by the end of 2025. The new equipment, which will be based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 modem, can be affixed to the roof or side of a given customer’s home.

“Qualcomm Technologies and industry leaders are at the heart of the 5G deployments being rolled out across Europe and this is the first 5G commercial mmWave deployment in the region. This new standard of connectivity will enable exciting new user experiences that will fundamentally enrich how we live our lives.” – Enrico Salvatori, senior vice president, and president, Europe/MEA, QUALCOMM Europe.
