Electrochromic tech will be used by many smartphones companies in 2021

Smartphones are a necessity in today’s time but the company with the most valuable innovations will capture the market. Thus, it becomes absolutely pivotal to keep investing in your research & development domain. In order to attract more customers, smartphone OEM’s, especially Chinese companies are thinking to bring electrochromic technology to smartphones from 2021.

The question arises, what is the use of Electrochromic technology and how will it impact the users? This technology takes the aid of an invisible alloy called tungsten oxide. The glass surface starts conducting electricity when this tungsten oxide is applied to it. A charge is passed due to the electricity which changes the composition of glass molecules. This change in composition brings a change in colour. Thus, with the help of this Electrochromic technology, users can customize the colour of the back cover of the mobile phone as per their wish. Also, the colour can change automatically during different functions such as incoming calls, message notifications, or health.

Though, an important point to make is that this feature is not completely new. It is obvious to expect that a smartphone with this feature will consume more battery. But astonishingly, the rear panel of these smartphones consume only 2-3mAh of battery power in one hour. That means, only 72mAh per day.

In January 2020 during the CES 2020, Oppo announced their new Concept One smartphone. This handset is equipped with a rear glass panel that supports this Electrochromic technology that we are talking about here. The technology helps in hiding the rear cameras. Another smartphone that was launched recently, Reno 5 Pro + 5G, comes with electrochromic technology on the rear panel. After Oppo, it seems like Xiaomi, Vivo, Meizu, and Nubia are also planning to bring smartphones to the facility. Even testing in some of the handsets has started. Would you be excited about this technology in your smartphone? Let us know in the comment section below.
