Microsoft plans to bring Android App support to Windows 10 with its Project Latte

Running Android apps on Windows is the thing that every one of us has tried at some point. I still remember installing the Bluestack emulator and running a bunch of APKs on my windows desktop. But no matter what we tried, the compatibility was always an issue.

But it seems like Microsoft is trying to finally bring support for Android Apps to Windows 10 devices. Earlier with its Project Astoria, Microsoft tried bringing the support for Android Apps to Windows 10 mobile, but the project was canceled, and so was the concept of Windows mobile phones. But now, Microsoft is making a second attempt at bringing Android app support to windows 10. This second attempt has been dubbed “Project Latte,” and its goal is to bring Android apps to Windows 10 as early as next year.

According to sources, the Project Latte will be powered by the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). The developers will be able to bring their apps to Windows 10 easily “with little to no code changes.” The apps will be packaged as MSIX, Windows app package format before they are submitted to the Microsoft Store. If the project becomes successful, then thousands of more apps will be added to the Windows app store. But the developers will face the issue of how the app will look on Windows. Due to the screen size difference between the PC and smartphones, developers will have a hard time rendering the apps to larger screen sizes.

Another issue is that Apps that require the support of Play Services may have to make some adjustments. Google doesn’t allow the installation of the Play Services app on any other device to accept an Android or ChromeOS. Reportedly, the Windows maker will announce its project next year, and we can expect it to release it by the fall 2021 update.
