Amazfit Bip U review: A great smartwatch that doesn’t hurt your pocket much

Recently Amazfit launched its budget-centric Bip U smartwatch, which is the first in its confirmed series of budget smartwatches. Instantly the smartwatch becomes hot, and in the Amazon Great Indian Festival, it was the best-seller in the smartwatches.

There’s a reason why it became so, as, in that sale, it was offered at an attractive introductory price of just ₹ 3,499 instead of its original pricing of ₹ 5,999. So, I too ordered one for myself, and I have spent almost 2 days now with it, so here’s my quick review of this new & amazing Amazfit Bip U smartwatch:

Display

This is the most interesting part which attracted me while I was writing about the product – it comes with a 1.43-inch 302×302 high pixel resolution TFT touch screen display. Yes, it’s a TFT, but surprisingly this is better than any low-resolution OLEDs as well.

The display goes very bright, and I had no issues while taking into the outdoors in direct sunlight. I am totally pleased with the touch response of the screen as well, at the price which it’s thrown at you cannot expect much.

Design & Strap

The Amazfit Bip U’s overall design is ok-ish, not very unique, however, good for normal usage. However, it is inspired by Apple Watch design, made out of plastic, which is an advantage because it’s incredibly light, weighing just 31 grams.

This helps to wear it at a longer stretch and even sleep without experience any pain at all. The smartwatch’s strap is also very comfortable; however, the quality of it is not that great and feels a bit cheap, which is the only downside of the total design of the new smartwatch.

Fitness features

Ok, this is for fitness enthusiasts, it packs in 60+ sports mode to track your activities and it covers almost all the basic & unique workouts you plan to do. I tried walking and it was almost accurate to what measurement you expect to get in a 30 min walk.

The detailing of your activity on your watch along with the app is amazing and it is indeed very useful for workouts and casual exercises undoubtedly.

UI & Zepp app

The Amazfit Bip U’s UI has indeed surprised me the most; it is very fluid and smooth, the overall color scheme and the experience are amazing. You will never even believe this to be a budget smartwatch, a status bar, detailed fitness charts, and heart rate monitoring in the home screen drawer.

Then you have detailed settings and tabs pane where you have a lot of options and even though it’s not an OLED screen still the high resolution did the job. The whole UI pretty well builds and when paired with the Zepp app you can do a lot of things.

Even though I used it for two days, I have received two system updates already, and the customization options are way better than any budget smartwatch. You get over 50 downloadable watch faces along with an option to make one while you can store 4 watch faces on the Amazfit Bip U itself to switch between any time.

PAI & SpO2 sensor

The PAI Health Assessment System is a great feature for fitness freaks who want to keep up with their fitness and can compare their scores with others in the globe. The PAI score you get is done for a better understanding of your physical well-being by turning your heart rate data into a personal score. The PAI score worked well and is great for fitness enthusiasts.

The spO2 sensor obviously helps you track your blood-oxygen levels and your health metric when you are under stress or engaged in workouts. However, the spO2 sensor is a bit weird as it takes quite a lot of tries to actually use the feature, so that’s a bit of a downside, I suppose.

Notifications & other apps

There are many notification options that you can receive and check out, including incoming calls, text messages, apps, and calendars. You can even set which app’s notifications you want to receive specific, comes in very handy rather than receiving all of them blindly. Also, the vibration motor is quite well considering the budget.

However, checking out notifications on this larger and high-resolution screen is amazing and you’ll never feel the smartwatch is a cheap one or so. You can do a lot of things aside from this like find your phone, check weather forecasts, control your phone’s camera, music control, and much more. All of these add-on features work perfectly without any hiccups whatsoever.

Heart Rate, Stress & Sleep Monitoring with Breathing Training

The heart rate monitoring on the Amazfit Bip U is surprisingly great as it comes with BioTracker PPG3 sensor to monitor your heart rate for 24×7 and I did use the feature. Quite frankly this feature drains out battery rapidly, however, is very useful to check your heart rate all-day so that you can keep yourself medically fit as well.

I also liked the smartwatch because the total heart-rate report can be seen directly on the Amazfit Bip U home screen and the app. The same goes for sleep monitoring, which I feel is the most accurate to date; it exactly recognizes your sleep time and how much & the quality of your sleep.

Breathing training is an optional feature quite useful for you to relax; all of this data and even your workout data can be accessed directly via the watch. You also get data from the last few days as well; the overall UI and the functionalities on this are amazing, still coming in at a low price.

Battery Life & Charging

The battery of the Amazfit Bip U has been rated up to last up to 9 days ideally. However, I received the watch at 64% and using it with a 24×7 heart monitor, and all kinds of notifications drained the battery in just two days.

The magnetic charger provided with the watch is very handy as it grips into the back of the Amazfit Bip U and charges it. However, the charging at first was quite fast as it can give you a day’s battery life in almost 15-20 minutes, taking almost 2 hours to fully charge.

Overall, using this smartwatch will full features can drain a lot of battery, but for basic stuff, it can give almost a week’s battery life while heavy users can expect only max 3-4 days of battery.
