Spotify calls out Apple for abusing its monopolistic powers

Spotify has accused Apple of abusing its monopolistic power, and unfair practices. The Swedish music streaming app urged regulators around the world that the tech giant’s latest policies stand to threaten the freedom of consumers “to listen, learn, create, and connect”.

This accusation of the streaming firm comes right after Apple’s announcement of its ‘Apple One’ subscription. This will come bundled alongside the Apple Watch Series 6 and 8th gen iPad models.

Why Spotify is unhappy?

The deal stands to pull more music streamers towards Apple. While other streaming services like Spotify stands to lose their customers. The users who will shift towards the ‘Apple One’ subscription will have only one unified bill and other music streaming services will lose most of their value in the market.

The statement released by Spotify states, “Once again, Apple is using its dominant position and unfair practices to disadvantage competitors and deprive consumers by favoring its own services. We call on competition authorities to act urgently to restrict Apple’s anti-competitive behavior, which if left unchecked, will cause irreparable harm to the developer community and threaten our collective freedoms to listen, learn, create, and connect”.

However, the Swedish music streaming firm is nowhere close to Apple. It simply cannot dish out enough features to compete with the tech giant.

Will it affect Apple?

The cry of the company cannot do any harm to Apple as the “Apple One” subscription is available on the devices which are produced by Apple itself.

Apple however is always precise in its claims of marketing and legalizations. The tech giant claims that none of its offerings are in violation of US anti-trust regulations.

Following Spotify’s statement, apple in a press release said, “Customers can discover and enjoy alternatives to every one of Apple’s services. We’re introducing Apple One because it is a great value for customers and a simple way to access the full range of Apple’s subscription services. We’ll be recommending the Apple One plan that saves you the most money based on the subscriptions you already have. It’s perfect for anyone who loves any of our services and wants to get more for less, and it’s especially great for families. Also, select services included in Apple One are available to enjoy on non-Apple devices, and you can cancel anytime”

The iPhone maker has always been the one to play its cards safely and does not hesitate to go on a legal scuffle with its competitors. If Spotify feels threatened by apple’s new policy then the only way for the Swedish streaming to secure its position is to become a one-stop-shop for music streamers.

For this to happen the company has to strike a deal with another streaming giant like Netflix or Amazon. Only then can the streaming firm be of any competition to apple.
