The final!

Thiem entered the US Open 2020 final as a heavy favourite, however, he was struggling earlier on in the game. Zverev outclassed Thiem in the first two sets and shocked the tennis community by winning 6-2 and 6-4.

It was reported that Thiem also suffered an injury that led to his lacklustre performance in the opening sets. However, he made a huge switch as he returned back to win the remaining three sets.

This was the first time in the history of US Open that someone has won the finals after losing the first two sets. He won by 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.

“We started to know each other back in 2014 and straight away started to develop a great friendship,” Thiem said during the trophy presentation. “We’ve made great things happen on the court and off the court. It’s amazing how far our journey brought us, to share this moment. I wish we could have two winners today. We both deserved it.”

US Open 2020 runners-up, Zverev was also carrying the mental stress of his parents being tested positive for Coronavirus and couldn’t be with him in New York.

“I miss them,” he said, before stepping away from the microphone. “Man, this is tough. I’m sure they’re sitting at home and even though I lost, they’re pretty proud.”

US Open 2020 has been a tournament of comebacks. Thiem’s opponent Zverev made a comeback in the semifinals to book his place in the finals. He was two sets down but ended up defeating Pablo Carreno Busta. Also, in the US Open 2020 women’s finals, Naomi Osaka made a comeback from being a set down to defeat Victoria Azarenka.
