Bartomeu says legendary players of the club except Messi must leave with honors

Yesterday, FC Barcelona’s club president Josep Maria Bartomeu did an interview on Barca TV although he did attend a press conference. In that interview, he said a lot of things about the club’s future and how he wants to revamp the club after the humiliating defeat to Bayern Munich.

He said: “there are legendary players who must leave with honors.” This is an interesting topic which Bartomeu is constantly stressing on throughout the interview. In this transfer window, Barcelona is desperate to sell players to reduce wage bills, so selling senior players for fresh legs is not a bad choice either.

Bartomeu said, “We must thank them for everything they have given and we must dismiss them in style, but they have to leave and in the next few days we will speak with them.” This looked more like a goodbye message for certain players.

Bartomeu admits to making some drastic decisions at the club

To the thoughts of restructuring the club he commented “an evolution is needed, with players who have already fulfilled and have to leave and players who will arrive. The club is in a good institutional, social and economic situation but in a sporting crisis.”

To an interesting topic, he was asked about was the power of the players and the dressing room, to that Bartomeu pointed out “all dressing rooms have a lot of power. The changing rooms are the most important piece and what the club works on so that there are successes. We are talking about a generation of players who have been winning titles for years without stopping. I don’t want to speak ill of anyone. I want to praise the figure of the players who have made us the best club in the world. I congratulate them and now is the moment to begin to dismiss some of these players with all honors ”.

These kind of words truly says a lot but things should have been taken care of earlier than this situation as this is the first when Barcelona are trophyless.

When he was asked about who he intend to ask to leave, the Barça president explained that “this planning that will be done from now on with the coach and the technical secretariat, if there are names, that there will be, they will be told. Some of them already know because it has been spoken to them in recent times. A conversation will be held with the players to explain their situation. The first thing to do is talk to the players first out of respect for them”.

Interestingly, he did not point out who he plans to show the exit door while he said which players are untouchables at the club:

“Leo Messi and many other players. It would be a cliché to just say, Leo Messi. Messi is the best player in history but there are other non-transferable ones. There are many young players. Ter Stegen, Lenglet, De Jong, Semedo, Dembélé, Griezmann. They are players who we count on a lot and who have come to spend many years at Barça”.

As he is ruling out any chance to sell young talents that end up pointing out to these players: Sergio Busquets, Piqué, and Sergi Roberto, as well as other like Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, Arturo Vidal, Rakitic and Umtiti.

Interestingly, Bartomeu also pointed out that neither these players have the freedom to say a yes or no. He said: “Each player is a decision and an individual talk. The options are open and the solutions are all on the table. Some have already been discussed and others will be discussed when consensus is reached with the technical secretary and the coach. All options are open”.

The current club president was also asked about the responsibility of the sports crisis to which he answered: “The responsibility is shared. We all have our responsibility in equal parts, but in the end, the person who is most responsible is me. There was a very important decision after Liverpool and I thought at that moment that we had to trust these players and Valverde again, and it was my decision to trust them again”, he concluded.

Even though Bartomeu said a lot of things about changes, sales, and restructuring the club, it will actually be interesting to see how he implements. Already he has sacked Setien and Abidal also found out their replacements.
