BCCI finally accepts CEO Rahul Johri’s resignation

BCCI CEO Rahul Johri had submitted his resignation a long time ago around 27th December last year. It has been finally accepted on Thursday.

A BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity: “Rahul Johri’s resignation has been accepted. He was earlier given an extension till 30th April but this time it has been accepted.”

The Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) gave BCCI President Sourav Ganguly the permission to run the board with his members. Rahul Johri was asked to continue as CEO until his term expires in 2021.

The strange thing is that Johri wanted to resign for many months but it was not accepted. Now, suddenly he has been asked to leave via email.

It seems the final nail in the coffin was hammered by the leak of the confidential tender information of Indian cricket team’s kit partner to the media. The tender was supposed to come out this week but the tender’s base price along with other details was leaked to the media.

According to a report by IANS, a BCCI official said: “He has been informed of the decision by email. He had resigned earlier and was asked to continue in the interim. However, the leak of confidential financial information of a bid that was being prepared accelerated the decision. Highest levels of confidentiality are expected when any bid takes place in an organisation.”

“This was considered to be scandalous and had the potential to compromise the bid. Financial matters if you cannot keep confidential, then it is a serious lapse that cannot be excused, especially with the new BCCI.”

Another official told IANS: “Maybe he was a little overconfident. He was able to survive despite his earlier conduct and there was an enquiry into allegations of sexual harassment against him. The reports of which were not even made available to the complainants which was found to be very surprising. Yet, he was asked to undergo gender sensitisation.”

“We felt that to have a CEO who has undergone this punishment was not appropriate for a role which requires you to give a fillip to women”s cricket. And as CEO he had to meet market leaders. He is certainly not the man who is capable of leading India towards the resumption of cricket. The female cricketers and women working in BCCI must be feeling relieved.”

Former CoA member Diana Edulji said that justice has finally prevailed. She told IANS. “Women cricketers and staff will heave a sigh of relief and after all this indiscipline during the nomination of coaches and all, he was rewarded with an increment which I was against. Better later than never. Justice has been done.”

It looks like Johri had fallen out of favour as the BCCI CEO and it was good for everyone to have him leave his post.
