boAt Airdopes 511 v2 review: Budget TWS earbuds to look out for in 2020 at Rs. 2,999

When it comes to audio products, boAt has a wide range of it, ranging from speakers to earphones, headphones and now a lot of TWS earbuds as well. The boAt Airdopes 441 was a great option at Rs. 2,499 and after reviewing it I tested out the company’s first truly wireless in-ear earbuds in 2020 i.e. the new boAt Airdopes 511 v2 that costs Rs. 2,999.

Obviously, boAt has its own reputation for its quality sound and design of products but is getting a lot of competition from mobile manufacturers who are blatantly making more and more audio products without actually tuning their sound and just selling them somehow. Although they have apps to configure their earbuds which are mostly for show, I was truly impressed with boAt’s new so-called airdopes.

Previously, I have used a lot of headphones, earphones and speakers from boAt, this was the first earbuds I was reviewing. Here is my experience with the new TWS earbuds:

Design

The main attraction of the earbuds is the design, that black and gold combo looks stunning and the boAt logo on top of the case of the earbuds makes it look even better. The earbuds too have that black and gold combo, with the gold lining at the top of the earbuds making it look premium.

The earbud case has a rounded design and it is quite unique and the case opens in a subtle way and the earbuds start blinking. Also, the magnets on the case are strong enough to hold the earbuds and there’s no wobbling when you shake the case and on top of that, it has an IP rating which is again a plus point at this pricing.

Fitting & Comfort

The two earbuds fit very well into the ear canal and having a curved side on the upper front end makes it easier to fit into any size of your ear. Now, it depends on the size of your canal whether or not it will stay tight, mostly I did not face any issues when I am roaming about or just sitting idle, not ideal when you are running or just laying down.

The earbuds is not heavy to the ears at all and you can easily wear it all day and it never hurts to ears which is most important. The rounded case is another great thing to carry with you and it fits well in your pocket and is not much heavy as such but its premium black look makes up for its slight bulkier design. Both the case and earbuds have a great hand feel and feels smooth when it’s in your hands.

Sound quality

The thing I was assured with being a boAt product is the sound quality, the earbuds have great sound truly, with proper bass, not as high you could expect from a premium one but yes it has that thumping feel when you hear groovy Bollywood songs or even while hearing Linkin Park songs I could feel the beats of the song but not as soothing as you experience from a JBL or Sony one.

The 6mm drivers can go really loud, yes really loud and even though it has no active noise cancellation but when you are hearing songs with the earbuds, with just 50-60% of the volume you won’t be able to hear anything outside. Well, most users can be content with 60-70% volume when you have a quiet surrounding, it really helps when you are in a noisy environment.

One thing that I have faced with previous boAt earphones or headphones still exist is even though you have the beats and it can go loud, but it doesn’t give you that crystal clear sound which I do not complain at the pricing but do keep a note of it. Still, the AAC high quality mode works really well and richens the sound experience to some extent.

Connectivty

This thing really impressed me, is connectivity, I have seen compromises in this segment even though being equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. The Instant Wake N’ Pair is a feature I am really impressed with, whenever you take the earbud out of the case, whether its two or one, if your phone’s Bluetooth is on, within a second or two the earbuds gets paired and it works with any Bluetooth device you’re paired with.

How much far might your device be from your earbuds it instantly pairs without any hassle at all also it has amazing range honestly, even you are two rooms away from your phone, the reception works well without any drop in sound, provided you do not have a lot of walls in between the range.

Latency & Gaming experience

This thing is quite concerning if you are a gamer and regular PUBG player like me, it truly hurts if your TWS earbuds have a high latency during because it’s important while gaming to even get the subtle sound to defend enemies. So, this earbud truly passes the test with flying colours, there are no problems at all even when you are gaming for over 2-3 hours at a stretch with no sound drop at all.

Honestly, this is one of most accurate earbuds while gaming that I’ve ever tested and talked about latency during other tasks like video streaming or music, there are no problems at all with lip-syncing and all. It works with any device but uses a Bluetooth 5.0 equipped device to get the best results.

Microphone

The key highlight shown in the product page is having dual microphones and when I tested it during calls and gaming, it really lives up to the mark. Surprisingly, even with one earbud, the microphones could deliver good sound to the other end of the receiver and I got no complaints from the other end. Also, there’s not a huge difference in sound reception when you are using one or two earbuds at a time.

During video calls to there were no lip sync issues with sound experienced from the other end and the audio reception quality is really great even during recording something as well. While gaming also people were clearly able to hear me but while gaming uses two of the earbuds for better sound reception.

Audio Controls

Unlike other earbuds which have touch controls at the side of the earbud, this one comes with dedicated buttons which can be a little annoying at times. So, it works well to pause music or skip tracks and use Google Assistant or Siri but sometimes it could not pick calls even though I was pressing the buttons, a touch could have completed the product in all respects honestly.

Also, it would be great from boAt to make an app for better software experience so users could customize their controls and see the charge of the earbuds and basic stuff rather than signing every new celeb for promotion and marketing. With the entry of a number of competitors in this segment, boAt needs to work on the software front, even though it delivers great audio quality overall.

Battery Life

A strong highlight of the earbuds is obviously is the promoted 24 hours battery life which is a bold claim honestly, but yes it delivers good battery life. I used it 4 days after a full charge and I was using it almost 5-6 hours a day which included music, video streaming and gaming so it almost delivers its promise and sometimes gives more than that.

So no complaints on the battery life of the earbuds and work longer if you use one of them at a time. Coming to the case, it has a micro-USB port for charging and four-light indicators at the front to display the capacity much like any other power bank, it charges the earbuds four times fully and itself gets charged in just more than an hour or so with a standard charger and within an hour or less than that if a fast charger is used.

One thing I also noticed is sometimes the earbuds and the case both were not responding some reason but after a second or so responded, also there’s an easy reset option to get out of such situations.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Has decent bass and the dynamic drivers works well
  • Great microphone reception
  • Good connectivity
  • Looks and feels modern
  • No latency during video streams and gaming
  • Decent battery life
boAt Airdopes 511 v2 review: Budget TWS earbuds to look out for in 2020 at Rs. 2,999

Cons:

  • Average Sound quality
  • Hurts when goes very loud
  • No touch controls, so cannot increase volume directly
  • No software to configure or tune the earbuds

Verdict

This TWS earbuds from boAt is a worthy competitor to others in the market and bass lovers will it but not great to experience crystal quality music, almost no difference during video streaming but overall, it delivers modest sound experience. In almost all key areas like battery life, connectivity, design, latency and microphone, the boAt Airdopes 511 v2 excels so at Rs. 2,999 it is a great option.

As I told previously if you are an average user you won’t experience any difference but if you are a true music fan go for better ones from Sony or JBL. But a regular user who needs average music experience with good battery life this can be it and also for taking calls and the connectivity it provides makes it ideal for office users or who take calls frequently to use the Airdopes 511 v2.
