A researchers team from Swiss University, EPFL tied up with the Swiss federal materials-science center named Empa to implement an idea of transparent surgical masks. And they succeed in this job. They come up with a biomass-based material that can be used to make “completely transparent surgical masks”.
The team combo registered a startup called HMCARE and also bagged CHF 1 million funding for the project. The amount is nearly around $1.05 million. The authority is very much hopeful about the arrival of this product at the beginning of 2021.
The transparent surgical masks are called ‘HelloMasks’. The primary goal is to replace the three-ply masks generally used by healthcare workers. Once the demand will grow, the company also will try to bring similar masks for the common people too.
As per the post by the EPFL University, the main idea of the transparent surgical masks owns Klaus Schonenberger. He is the head of EPFL’s EssectialTech Center. It came to his mind while working in western Africa during the Ebola outbreak in 2015. He said, “It was touching to see that nurses-covered from head to toe in protective gear – pinned photos of themselves on their chests so that patients could see their faces”.
The HelloMasks material is 99% biomass-derivative. They are still working to make it fully eco-friendly. Hope for the quick arrival of this product.
