Kompany says Manchester United ‘blown away’ the 2011-12 Premier League title

Manchester City was a just a shadow of their city rivals Manchester United before the 2011-12 season. United was dominating the Premier League under Sir Alex Ferguson.

City won the Premier League title in the 2011-12 campaign and things began to turn around in Manchester. In the last few years, Manchester has been blue rather than red like the previous years. City has won the last two successive Premier League titles.

Vincent Kompany, captain of the 2011-12 Premier League winning side has admitted that they wouldn’t have won the title if United hadn’t thrown away the title at the end of the campaign.

In that season, United were clear favourites. They were 8 points clear at the top of the league table with only five games remaining. But they lost against Wigan Athletic and Everton and later lost to Manchester City, courtesy Kompany’s header.

The title winner was set to be decided on the last day of the campaign. Many thought United had somehow won the league, but Aguero had other ideas in his head. He scored a 94th-minute winner against Queens Park Rangers and snatched it away from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side at the last second.

Vincent Kompany told Match of the Day: “The image that stays with me is the image of confusion over there, it’s very vivid in my mind. I think it’s special to do it over Manchester United given the rivalry.”

“That season, as much as over the course of the season we were the better team, in reality, United threw it away. We were not consistent. We were fantastic in moments and then moments of inexplicable losses and moments throughout the season.”

“You’d think with Ferguson, Rio Ferdinand at the back, Vidic, Van der Sar, Evra, it was a great team, Gary Neville, all these guys and yet they gave it away.”

“We did something amazing, whenever we had the chance we capable of winning eight, nine, 10 in a row and then things would explode and there would be a training ground fight or whatever, then we’d win 10 more in a row and lose.”

“It was a bit of the old City still at that time but we had momentum right at the end and that was the most important.”
