East Bengal’s head coach Alejandro Menendez believes they deserved the title

The Spanish coach believes that the Red and Gold brigade should have won their first ever I-League title.

East Bengal failed to win the I-League once again this season as they fell a point short of champions Chennai City FC on the final day.

The wait for the I-League trophy for the Kolkata outfit continued as they are yet to win the competition. They were at the second place in four seasons( 2010-11, 2011-12, 2013-14) and at the third place in three seasons(2012-13, 2015-16, 2016-17), but never won a title.

“I think when you lose a title, it is not because you lost one game. I now want to keep all of the positives. There is not a special reason. We had one team that wanted one more point than us. The team who got more points won the title,” said Alejandro Menendez.

For the third time in as many years, the I-League title race will be decided on the final match day and the two teams in the fray for the title today are Chennai City FC and East Bengal.

East Bengal comes from behind to defeat Gokulam Kerala 2-1 in Kozhikode in their last match but it isn’t enough to secure a maiden I-League title. Chennai City has defeated Minerva Punjab by 3-1 in their final match and the title goes South this season.

Alejandro Menendez’s men have to beat Gokulam Kerala FC and hope that Chennai City drops points against Minerva Punjab, then only they would be able to win the title.

If the points of East Bengal and Chennai City were same then also Chennai City would have won because of the number of goals they have scored and they have received.
