iOS 11 is the eleventh major release of the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc., being the successor to iOS 10. It was announced at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5, 2017, and released on September 19, 2017.

Among iOS 11’s changes: the lock screen and Notification Center are combined, allowing all notifications to be displayed directly on the lock screen. The various pages of the Control Center are unified, gaining custom settings and the ability to 3D Touch icons for more options.

Windows 10 S

Windows 10 S is a fully-fledged version of Windows 10 designed for low-cost computers as well as education-oriented PCs and even some premium computers, such as the new Microsoft Surface Laptop.

Tech Rewind

According to Microsoft, the “S” doesn’t stand for anything in particular, but the company says Windows 10 S is streamlined for simplicity, security, and speed. Windows 10 S will boot 15 seconds faster than a comparable machine running Windows 10 Pro with the same profile and apps installed, and it will run as fast on day 1,000 as it does on day one, Microsoft says.

The big difference between Windows 10 S and any other version of Windows 10 is that 10 S can only run applications downloaded from the Windows Store. Windows 10 S will also come with Microsoft’s BitLocker encryption system for securing your files in case of theft, which some versions of Windows 10 Home do not have available. It will also receive the same updates at the same time as other versions of Windows 10.

Android Oreo

Android 8.0 “Oreo” is a version of the Android mobile operating system. It was first released as an alpha quality developer preview in March 2017 and released to the public on August 21, 2017.

Tech Rewind

It contains a number of major features, including notification grouping, picture-in-picture support for video, performance improvements and battery usage optimization, and support for auto-fillers, Bluetooth 5, system-level integration with VoIP apps, wide color gamuts, and Wi-Fi Aware. Android Oreo also introduces two major platform features, including Android Go—a software distribution of the operating system for low-end devices, as well as support for implementing a hardware abstraction layer.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium

Tech Rewind

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is an Android smartphone manufactured and marketed by Sony. Part of the Xperia X series, the device was announced to the public along with the Xperia XZs at the annual Mobile World Congress in February 2017.

The device’s highlight features are a 4K HDR ultra high-resolution display. Known internally as Sony IMX400, the new sensor features a RAM chip sandwiched in between the sensor and control circuitry layers, serving as a large and fast buffer to where the camera can temporarily offload photos or videos without waiting to store the captured data in the internal phone storage. This enables the camera to record super slow-motion videos at 960 fps, at a steady 720p resolution. Recording at super slow motion is limited to 0.18 seconds per buffer, due to limitations.

Officially called Motion Eye, the Xperia XZ Premium has a 19 MP 1/2.3” Exmor RS for mobile sensor with a 1.22 μm pixel pitch, f/2.0 aperture, and 25mm wide G Lens.

Samsung Galaxy S8

Tech Rewind

The Samsung Galaxy S8Samsung Galaxy S8+ (shortened to S8 and S8+, respectively) and Samsung Galaxy S8 Active are Android smartphones produced by Samsung Electronics as part of the Samsung Galaxy S series. The S8 and S8+ were unveiled on 29 March 2017 and directly succeed the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, with a North American release on 21 April 2017 and international rollout throughout April and May.

Both S8 and S8+ contain upgraded hardware and major design changes over the S7 line, including larger screens with a taller aspect ratio and curved sides on both the smaller and larger models, iris and face recognition, a new suite of virtual assistant features known as Bixby (along with a new dedicated physical button for launching the assistant), and a docking station accessory that allows the phones to be used with a personal phone-styled desktop interface with keyboard and mouse input support. The S8 Active features tougher materials designed for protection against shock, shatter, water and dust, with a metal frame and a rugged, tough texture for improved grip. The Active’s screen measures the same size as the standard S8 model but loses the curved edges in favor of a metal frame.

iPhone X

Tech Rewind

iPhone X is a smartphone designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. It was announced on September 12, 2017. The phone was released on November 3, 2017.

The iPhone X is intended to showcase what Apple thinks is technology of the future, specifically adopting OLED screen technology for the first time in iPhone history, as well as using a glass and stainless-steel form factor, offering wireless charging, and removing the home button in favor of introducing Face ID, a new authentication method using advanced technologies to scan the user’s face to unlock the device, as well as for the use of animated emojis called Animoji. The new, nearly bezel-less form factor marks a significant change to the iPhone user interaction, involving swipe-based gestures to navigate around the operating system rather than the typical home button used in every previous iteration of the iPhone lineup.

Pixel 2

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are Android smartphones designed, developed and marketed by Google. They were announced during a Google event on October 4, 2017, as the successors to the Pixel and Pixel XL. They were released on October 19, 2017, and serve as the second set of smartphones in the Google Pixel hardware line.

Tech Rewind

The Pixel 2 sports a 5-inch (130 mm) AMOLED display panel with 1920×1080 resolution, coming in at around 441 PPI, while the Pixel 2 XL comes with a 6-inch (150 mm) P-OLED display panel with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 2880×1440 resolution at 538 PPI.

Both phones have a 12.2-megapixel rear camera capable of recording 4K video at 30 FPS, 1080p video at 120 FPS, and 720p video at 240 FPS. The camera also contains phase-detection autofocus, laser autofocus, and HDR+ processing. Pixel 2 owners receive free unlimited storage for all photos and videos taken on the phone in original quality through the end of 2020, with unlimited high-quality storage continuing afterward. The Pixel 2 camera received a score of 98 from DxOMark, making it the highest performing mobile device camera that they have tested.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL also includes the Intel-designed Pixel Visual Core image processor for faster and lower power image processing, though it is not expected to be enabled until Android 8.1 is released. The camera does not allow capturing Raw images and lacks manual controls. Unlike Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone X, the Pixels do not have support for 4K video at 60 FPS, as the processor is not powerful enough. Although the camera has Optical Image Stabilization it is unable to remove some high-frequency vibrations that other smartphones are able to remove.

AMD Ryzen Processors

Tech Rewind

Ryzen is a brand of central processing units (CPUs) and accelerated processing units (APUs) marketed and designed by AMD.

The brand was introduced in 2017 with products implementing the Zen microarchitecture for the CPU. Ryzen is the first consumer-level implementation of the new Zen microarchitecture. Ryzen CPUs offered stronger multi-threaded performance and weaker single-threaded performance relative to comparable Intel CPUs. The Ryzen CPUs returned AMD to the high-end desktop CPU market, offering performance able to compete with Intel’s Core i7 series of CPUs. Since the release of Ryzen CPUs, AMD’s CPU market share has increased.

Google Home

Google Home is a brand of smart speakers developed by Google. The first device was announced in May 2016 and released in the United States in November 2016, with subsequent releases globally throughout 2017.

Tech Rewind

Google Home speakers enable users to speak voice commands to interact with services through Google’s intelligent personal assistant called Google Assistant. A large number of services, both in-house and third-party, are integrated, allowing users to listen to music, control playback of videos or photos, or receive news updates entirely by voice.

Google Home devices also have integrated support for home automation, letting users control smart home appliances with their voice. Multiple Google Home devices can be placed in different rooms in a home for synchronized playback of music.

An update in April 2017 brought multi-user support, allowing the device to distinguish between up to six people by voice. In May 2017, Google announced multiple updates to Google Home’s functionality, including free hands-free phone calling in the United States and Canada; proactive updates ahead of scheduled events; visual responses on mobile devices or Chromecast-enabled televisions; Bluetooth audio streaming; and the ability to add reminders and calendar appointments.

The original product has a cylindrical shape with colored status LEDs on the top for a visual representation of its status, and the cover over the base is modular, with different color options offered through Google Store intended for the device to blend into the environment. In October 2017, Google announced two additions to the product lineup, the Google Home Mini, and the Google Home Max.

Razer Project Valerie

Tech Rewind

Project Valerie is an integrated all-in-one machine, though. All three displays match what you’ll find on the Blade Pro: a 17.3-inch 4K IGZO display with G-Sync. When stowed away, the two side displays retract into slots behind the main display. They slide out from those hideaways when deployed, automatically positioning and aligning correctly with the main screen, thanks to some help from nifty robot arms

Razer also hasn’t said anything about battery life yet. A battery takes a hit for every pixel it powers, so the jump from a 1080p screen to 4K means a laptop dies faster. Another jump from 4K to 12K? You might as well not even have a battery. Considering the Blade Pro already includes the largest battery allowed on airplanes (99WHr) and only gets 3 to 4 hours, you’d better have an outlet on hand for Project Valerie.

Guys, 10.or D Has Arrived

Sarahah

Tech Rewind

It is a social networking service for providing anonymous feedback. In Arabic sarahah means “frankness” or “honesty”. It was created by Zain al-Abidin Tawfiq in the end of 2016 and reached a sudden worldwide success by mid-2017. This growth is considered to be deeply related with the release of a Snapchat update that allowed people to share URLs on their snaps.

Sarahah allows people to text messages to others and the person reading that could then reply anonymously. Initially it was meant for workers to compliment their bosses.

It was released on the US Apple App Store on June 13, 2017, and also has users in several other countries including Canada and India. An update was released by Snapchat on July 5. Within two weeks, it was at the number 1 position. The rise was also seen in a Google Trends report.

On 26 August, 2017, it was reported that the Sarahah mobile app quietly uploads the user’s address book to its web servers.

After the popularity of Sarahah, spam invites were sent by the third party apps to the users in exchange for revealing the usernames of anonymous senders.

Blue Whale (game)

The Blue Whale Game also known as “Blue Whale Challenge”, is a 21st-century social network phenomenon that is claimed to exist in several countries, beginning in 2016. The game reportedly consists of a series of tasks assigned to players by administrators over a 50-day period, with the final challenge requiring the player to commit suicide.

“Blue Whale” came to prominence in May 2016 through an article in a Russian newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, that linked many unrelated child suicides to membership of group “F57” on the Russian-based VKontakte social network. A wave of moral panic swept Russia. However the piece was later criticised for attempting to make a causal link where none existed, and none of the suicides was found to be as a result of the group activities.

Facebook stories

Facebook Stories are short user-generated photo or video collections that can be uploaded to the user’s Facebook. It were created on March 28, 2017. They are considered to be a second news feed for the social media website.

It is focused around Facebook’s in-app camera which allows users to use fun filters and Snapchat-like lenses to their content as well as add visual geolocation tags to their photos and videos. The content is able to be posted publicly on the Facebook app for only 24 hours or can be sent as a direct message to a Facebook friend.

As people mostly post photos and videos, Stories is the way they’re going to want to do it,” says Facebook Camera product manager Connor Hayes, noting Facebook’s shift away from text status updates after 10 years as its primary sharing option. “Obviously we’ve seen this doing very well in other apps. Snapchat has really pioneered this,” explained Hayes. Facebook has seen a lot of success through other applications like Snapchat and Instagram, especially since Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in 2012. After that WhatsApp(also owned by Facebook) got this type of feature.
